Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother, as well as her godparents. Her father left her family. In her childhood Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford was intrigued by the acting profession during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford instead applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure a place on her fourth application. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who - was one of Ford's classmates. Ford didn't complete her degree until 1993. However, in 1991, Ford had made her first television appearance in an episode of Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning in the Nineties. Also, she was a regular performer in theatres, before eventually being a part of with the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies that were added to her repertoire in 1996.
